Search process ramps up for new Worship Leader

Triad worship band in action

Triad Baptist has formed a seven-member search committee to find a new Worship Leader for its contemporary service, and plans to begin interviewing candidates in January.

Led by Tim Gerber, executive pastor for children and ministries, and Jared Hoots, Triad’s current high school youth pastor and contemporary worship leader, the team also includes: deacons Michael Bowers, Greg Cooney and Charlie Pearson plus praise band members Mandy Freeman and Tony Artimisi, and member Jason Johnson.

Gerber is providing administrative oversight in the search process, with Hoots handling the day-to-day details based on his experience as Triad’s contemporary service worship leader.

Hoots said that each search team member brings a unique perspective to the work. All were approved by Lead Pastor Rob Decker and other members of Triad’s Executive Leadership Team.

Cooney and Pearson serve on Triad’s personnel committee and represent that view. Artimisi, the praise band’s drummer, has a doctorate in percussion and serves on the music faculty at Winston-Salem State so will play a lead role in ensuring the candidate has the required abilities in music theory. Hoots said that Freeman, who he served with at Peace Haven Baptist in Yadkinville, has led choirs and, as a “natural leader,” can help identify the candidate that has those skills.

He said Johnson was a natural selection because of his role bringing a contemporary worship service to Triad and for his ear for music and experience with the breadth of offerings in the praise and worship genre.

“We’re very excited about the group we have and think they provide the perspectives needed to help us find the best fit for Triad,” Hoots said. “I think it’s really important that we find a person who not only is skilled musically but has the theological depth so they can continue in our tradition of singing songs that are both a joy to sing and rich in meaning and biblical accuracy.”

The search team held its first meeting Dec. 13 to review nearly 20 resumes received from candidates over the past six weeks. Members received packets to review over the next two weeks and rank to identify their top choices before the team reconvenes on Dec. 27.

The top candidates identified by the team as a whole (and their wives, if they are married) will receive follow-up questionnaires exploring who they are as people, including their personal testimony and philosophy of worship music.

The search team will give those candidates about a week to return the questionnaires, Hoots said, and then the search team will make its final cut, selecting the three or four candidates to interview. Those interviews are expected to come in mid- to late January, so the church vote and other aspects of the process can be completed in time for the new worship leader to come onboard in spring 2016.
