Another 'Souper Sunday' for Awana

Connie VanHorn and family

Awana clubbers at Triad Baptist Church did some super service on the day of the big game, collecting soup to feed the hungry Feb. 7 in their latest “Souper Sunday.”

Children filled two large tubs with 62 soup cans for the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission — one of the local ministries Triad supports as part of its missions budget.

“We’re not only grateful for the donation but encouraged to see the hearts of the kids thinking about others with needs,” said Ken Heater, the Rescue Mission’s executive director. “I think it’s a fantastic thing that you all do for us every year.”

The Winston-Salem Mission uses the food for its food pantry and 90-day and one-year residential programs. Because of the outpouring of community generosity represented by Triad’s latest food gifts — and those from other churches, schools, and community groups — Heater said that food donations are up 50 percent over last year.

Austin Needham, assistant director for children’s ministries, said Triad has had a Souper Bowl Sunday Awana night for at least seven years.

“It’s awesome to have a theme night that incorporates giving in action while we’re having a ton of fun with special games, music, and faith lessons,” Needham said.
