Who Should Be Baptized?
Baptism is for anyone who has accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. It’s a public declaration of faith and an act of obedience to Christ’s command (Matthew 28:19-20). Salvation comes through faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection as the only payment for sin (Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 10:9-10).

You don’t need to “clean up” your life first—baptism follows belief (salvation)and is a step of obedience (Acts 2:41, Acts 8:36-38).

Baptism: What’s It All About?

If baptism doesn’t save us, why is it so important? The New Testament mentions baptism over 100 times, showing its significance for every believer. Here's why baptism matters:

A Public Declaration of Faith -- Baptism is how you show the world you’re following Jesus. It’s like wearing a wedding ring—it’s an outward symbol of an inner commitment. Through baptism, you say, “I belong to Christ.”
“And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, ‘See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?’ And Philip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you may.’ And he replied, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’ And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.”Acts 8:36-38 (ESV)

A Picture of New Life -- Going under the water represents dying to your old life, and coming up symbolizes being raised to new life in Christ. It’s a powerful visual of what happened when you were saved.
“We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.”Romans 6:4-5 (ESV)

A Symbol of Cleansing -- Baptism doesn’t wash away sins physically, but it represents the spiritual cleansing that happened when you accepted Christ.
“Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.”1 Peter 3:21-22 (ESV)

An Act of Obedience -- Baptism is a step of obedience to Jesus’ command. In Scripture, belief in Christ is followed by baptism—it’s called “believer’s baptism” for that reason.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV)
“And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.”1 John 2:3 (ESV)

What About Infants?

At Triad Baptist Church, we view parent-child dedications as a way for parents to commit to raising their children according to Scripture, similar to how some denominations practice infant christening. However, neither christening nor dedication makes someone a Christian—only a personal decision to accept Christ’s sacrifice does that. We believe Scripture teaches that baptism is for those who have personally professed faith in Jesus (after the age of accountability).
