Trunk or Treat encore brings smiles

Children in Triad’s Awana Bible clubs again didn’t have far to go to experience some wholesome fall fun.

The new parking lot right outside the Children’s Ministry wing doors proved the perfect place for the church’s second Trunk or Treat experience.

Along with The Crossing middle student, Radiate high school and Unite college and career ministries, dozens of individual members and their families joined to decorate 30 trunks to host Awana clubbers. Each group in the program took turns going down two long rows of trunks.

When it was over, the top prizes of Chick-Fil-A and other gift cards went to:

  • Best decorated: Bridget and Brian Allen (The Pumpkin Patch)
  • Most creative: Drew and Whitney Anderson (Toys)
  • Best overall for The Crossing: Candy Land
  • Best overall for Radiate: Noah’s Ark

The Allens were among several newcomers decorating their first trunks at Triad. So were Billy and Mary Avant who wore jellyfish hats. “Our daughter was a jellyfish on Halloween this year so we went with an ocean theme,” Mary said.

Just a few cars down, Rebecca Mabe helped her granddaughter create a lemonade stand theme—using the same stand the child used to sell $30 worth of lemonade last summer.

Duck Dynasty was the most popular trunk or treat theme, with three different takes on the hit TV show, but the trunks also included a trunk subbing as a library full of books with librarian (Jenni Jumes) to say “Shhh”as well as and trunks for the Wizard of Oz, The Beverly Hillbillies, a modified race car, and even a trunk that offered free ice cream, courtesy of a family who owns a Bruster’s ice cream location in High Point.

“The second year of Trunk or Treat turned out great,” said Austin Needham, assistant children’s ministry director, who coordinates the annual event with member Janet West. “With knowledge retained from last year and the use of the new parking lot, Trunk or Treat at Triad has continued to improve. The amount of work put into the vehicles and decorations was incredible.

“We even had boats, buses, and race cars. Thanks to everyone who participated and helped with this year’s Trunk or Treat. We have big plans already in the works for next year's event.”
