Nov. 19 business meeting: Meet Deacon Candidate Allen Angell

Allen and Pam Angell

Pam and Allen Angell

Editor’s Note: As the terms of deacons Don Beck and Michael Bowers expire, candidates Allen Angell and Phil West have been nominated to replace them. This Connections Q&A with Angell is part of a new backgrounder series on deacon candidates before member voting. If elected, both would serve three-year terms.

Connections: How did you become a Christian?

Angell: I was saved at the age of 25, on Feb. 2, 1973. I had been under conviction and the burden of my sin for about a month. I could hardly eat and I couldn’t sleep. I wasn’t the husband my wife needed and deserved and, every time I looked at my 2-year-old daughter I knew I wasn’t the dad or example she needed. My mother-in-law had a pastor visit me, and I accepted Christ as Lord and Savior during that visit.

Connections: Why is your faith important to you?

Angell: As it says in Hebrews 11:1, I find the older I get and see this world is getting worse and worse, my faith keeps me looking up and reminds me the Lord is coming soon. My faith is a comfort to me, knowing, as it says in 1 John 2:5, that ‘I am in Him and He is in me.’

Connections: Have you ever been a deacon before and, if so, where?

Angell: I have been a deacon at Triad once before and I was privileged to serve on the Executive Leadership Team board. Before we joined Triad, I also served as deacon at a church in Winston-Salem.

Connections: What role do you believe deacons should play in a church’s ministry?

Angell: A deacon should have a servant’s heart. A deacon helps with decision-making and in the growth and direction of the church by assisting the pastor. Deacons also have a part in church discipline. Each deacon has a ministry or ministries to look over. The chairperson meets with that deacon to discuss the advancement of that particular ministry and the deacon reports back to the pastor.

Connections: How long have you been a member of Triad?

Angell: My wife, Pam, and I joined Triad in 2007.

Connections: Introduce us to the Angell household.

Angell: Pam and I have been married for 46 years. We have a beautiful daughter, Lori, a great son-in-law, Stan, and two beautiful granddaughters, Brooke, 16, and Mallory, 10. We’re blessed that all know Jesus Christ as Savior, and have an eternal future in heaven to look forward to.

Connections: What are some of the ministries you have been involved in at Triad?

Angell: I am a Sunday School teacher but only as a substitute at this time. I help with the visitation for the First Step classes, and have served on the Finance Committee. I have also volunteered with the Nehemiah’s Few handyman ministry.

Connections: What do you do in your career?

Angell: After my tour of duty in the Air Force from 1968 to 1973, I went to work with Salem Electric Company and was there until 1988. I obtained my unlimited electrical license in 1984. I was asked to come to Greensboro and help a young electrical company build their business and worked there until 2002 as vice president of operations before returning to Salem Electric. I’m currently a project manager, and, Lord willing, plan to retire at the end of the year after 43 years.
