New Worship Center/Gym opens

People enter the new Worship Center/Gym on July 6

The wait is over.

A day after an Open House gave members and several Kernersville residents a sneak peek, Triad held its first service in the new Worship Center/Gym.

The July 6 worship service is the third held in a different location on the church campus since 1985, when Triad opened its first sanctuary on 6.38 heavily wooded acres off what was then known as N.C. 150. Today, Triad’s nearly 33-acre campus is at the center of the bustling South Main Street commercial corridor.

“These really are exciting days at Triad,” Pastor Rob Decker said in a video shown during the inaugural services at 9 and 10:30 a.m., which replaced three different service and Sunday School times.

“My prayer is that we become people of vision,” Decker said, taking the saving message of Jesus Christ to Kernersville and beyond.

In a message from the Book of Samuel treading familiar ground (David’s battle with the giant Goliath), Decker said that the 44,000 square foot building, gym, commercial kitchen, science lab, media center, and classrooms for both the church and Triad Baptist Christian Academy are important resources for ministry.

But he said it’s the people using them — and allowing God to empower and work through them — that wins life’s most important battle. He said that spiritual victory requires having a shepherd’s heart for His sheep and reliance on God’s power to save families, lives and communities.

“These tools cannot break down someone’s heart” and convince people of their need for God, Decker said about the new facilities. “You have to use the tools of the shepherd to demolish strongholds (including prayer and God’s word as revealed in the Bible). You can’t do that with a building.”

Decker thanked members for the gifts of money, time and talents that made opening day possible. “Thank you for your labors,” he said. “God had a plan for David’s life and He has a plan for you” to discover and live out here as part of His church.

Jason and Jamie Marshall were among those taking part in the contemporary service at 9:30 a.m., which had ushers opening up a section of bleachers. (The church had not yet set out all the chairs to gauge attendance in the shift from three to two services.)

Triad welcomed a total of 1,448 adults and children in contemporary, traditional and Kids Street Church services — 862 at 9 a.m. and 586 at 10:30 a.m., the traditional service time. In the new control room overlooking the Worship Center below, volunteer Chuck Moorefield practiced controlling the three new digital cameras that will eventually stream the church’s services far beyond Kernersville.

“I think they’ve done an amazing job getting all the equipment and everything in place,” he said.

Downstairs, Jamie Marshall listened to the praise and worship team sing another song of praise to God.“I think it’s a really nice facility,” she said.

History made, member Teresa Carter walked out of the Worship Center/Gym for the first time. Elsewhere in the building, Executive Pastor for Children and Ministries Tim Gerber held Kids Street Church for the first time in the old sanctuary.

This fall, new kid-friendly sets will be installed there to complete the transformation of the space into the new Kids Street Worship Center.

“I believe the new facilities will help us reach even more people,” Carter said. “Our growth is a sign that were making those connections.”
