The Rising opens 7 p.m. Sept. 17 in the Youth Room at Triad Baptist Church in Kernersville.

Working at a Christian camp in Ohio, Weston Compton saw how a community-based ministry in Cleveland encouraged and connected him with other young believers.

So he decided to bring the idea back home. Thus was born The Rising, a new outreach ministry to high school seniors and college-age youth in the Triad which opens 7 p.m. Sept. 17 in the Youth Room.

Supported by a core group that includes leaders from the Unite college and career ministry—with which it shares the goal of uniting similarly-aged people in Christ—Compton said The Rising seeks to spiritually equip and connect “a generation that rises above this world and proclaims the name of Jesus throughout this community, state, and through the world.”

The Rising will feature praise and worship music, Biblical teaching and fellowship from 7 to 8:30 p.m. After the Sept. 17 launch, the ministry will meet on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Triad, and add a small groups (family group time) to the schedule. A special activity will be scheduled on fifth Tuesdays to further build relationships.

The ministry aims to:

  • Reach high school seniors and college-age students throughout the community in order to come together and celebrate their unity in Christ.
  • Disciple believers in order to prepare them for sharing the gospel with people in their sphere of influence.
  • Worship Jesus Christ for the hope he has given all of His children who put their faith and trust in Him.

“The difference in this ministry is that The Rising is not just for Triad people at all,” Compton said. “In fact, we’d love to see the majority of the people be complete strangers. The goal is to bring together people in Christ throughout the community regardless of church or school separations and come together as One body in Christ (Romans 12:4-5).”

Along with Compton, who is leading the effort, the core group includes Shean Phillips, Unite and Life Groups pastor, members Austin Decker, Devin Purgason and Seth Woodall.

The ministry has primarily tapped social media to spread the word through Facebook invites shared by fans of its Facebook page as well as through Instagram and other social media. Already, more than 8,000 invites have been sent. The chance to enter and win a drawing for a $10 gift card for the Awake Café coffee shop also is being offered to those who share the event and make The Rising Opening Night promotional image their cover photo on Facebook.

“We’ve been encouraged by the support and interest, and look forward to what God is going to do in the lives of those who come and become a part of The Rising,” Compton said.
